The British Isles lie at the juncture of several regions with past episodes of tectonic mountain building. These orogenic belts form a complex geology that records a huge and varied span of Earth's history. Of particular note was the Caledonian Orogeny during the Ordovician Period, c. – Ma and early Silurian period, when the craton Baltica collided with the terrane Location: North-western Europe.   This post is part of the European Geography and Cultures Series.. The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. Geographically speaking, the British Isles are comprised of Great Britain, Ireland and a number of smaller islands including the Scottish islands in the north and some of the Channel Islands in the south. Politically, the island of Ireland has been divided into two states since 6 December . This British Isles primary resource also assists with teaching the following Key Stage 1 Geography objectives from the National Curriculum: name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas National Curriculum Key Stage 2 Geography objective.

The British Isles are an interesting topic that most people have a tough time keeping straight. Although one of the most important geographical locations in terms of American foreign relations, many Americans have a tough time characterizing the United Kingdom when compared to its separate countries.
